Overseas, it is raining ash
A volcano in Iceland, which began erupting on Wednesday, has created a huge ash cloud over northern Europe, halting all air traffic and stranding hundreds of thousands of passengers.
This is one of the biggest flight disruptions ever seen in the region, and it could last another two days. Even if the disruption is short lived, the financial impact on airlines is likely to be significant.
As it erupted, the volcano hurled ash about 11 kilometres into the atmosphere, which then moved southeast overnight.
Volcanic ash contains tiny particles of glass and pulverized rock, which can damage engines and airframes — not to mention human lungs. Fortunately scientists say this volcanic eruption has had no health impact on people in the area as it happened at such a high altitude.
