Machu Picchu (Peru) - Located way up in the Andes Mountains is a beautiful old city in the clouds. To get here you must hike up the legendary Inca trail from the city of Cuzco in Peru. Machu Picchu was built around 1440 as a country retreat for Incan Nobility. The city is made up of 200 stone buildings, including homes, temples, and a large palace.

Pompeii (Italy) - This ancient city near Naples, Italy, was destroyed in the year 79 by a volcano that left it buried in ash. For 1,600 years the city was completely lost, until an architect digging a new course for the river Sarno accidently discovered it. Today, it is a perfectly preserved site, with its many streets, buildings -- and even bodies -- encased in the natural plastic casts!

Cities of the Ancient Maya (Mexico) - Beginning around 2,500 years ago, the Mayan people lived and ruled in Mexico and Central America. Their civilization fell apart around the year 900 due to heavy warfare, famine and drought. Today, people from all over travel to Mexico to see the famous ruins of Uxmal, Chichen Itza, and Tulum, where great Mayan temple pyramids, palaces, and shrines still stand.

Easter Island (South Pacific) - This tiny spec in the South Pacific is the most isolated place on earth, located 2,000 miles off the coast of Chile. Easter Island is famous for the giant stone statues that cover its landscape, built by the Polynesians who settled there around the year 400. Eventually, as the population grew and spread across the island, all its natural resources were used up and everyone slowly died off.

L'Anse-Aux-Meadows (Canada) - Near the northern tip of Newfoundland lay the relics of a Viking settlement. Historians believe it was founded around the year 1000, but what happened to the inhabitants after that remains a mystery. Amazingly, the settlement remained unknown until 1960, when a husband-and-wife team of archeologists found it.

I have been there with my family and it is incredible. We had done a 4 day trek to Aguas Caliente (the town right at the bottom) and then we climbed to Machu Picchu at 5 am in the morning. It was tiring, but so cool and worth it. One of the nice children in the village said to us one morning - "Machu Picchu, nice to meet you!" and we said that the whole trip. Peru is coooool.
