Are you sick of seeing your friend’s travel photos on Instagram? Maybe you’ve been wanting to go travelling yourself but you simply haven’t been able to save enough money? This post is for you. Here are some of my top tips to help you save money for travel:
Set your goals
Believe it or not, but it is possible to travel without getting being wealthy. The fact that you’re reading this post on the internet puts you ahead of a large percentage of the world’s population. And the fact that you can even think about flying means you’ve won the uterus lottery.
So how do you turn your dreams into reality? It’s all about setting achievable goals. Without defining exactly what you want and why, it’s impossible to meet your target. Everyone wants to travel ‘someday”, so you need to narrow down when you want to travel, which month you’d like to leave, where you’d like to go, and how long you’d like to stay away for.
Cut your expenses
Most of us are spending much more than we need to each week. For me, I found that I spent the most when I was supposed to be saving for travel- simply because I was miserable in my job and wanted to be overseas- it doesn’t really make much sense, does it?
The best thing you can do is cut your expenses to the bone. That means ditching the expensive gym membership you never use, entertaining at home instead of going out, and bringing lunch to work every day. If you’re finding it difficult to afford your car, it may be a good idea to sell it and visit your local Ford dealer to what used cars there are that you could downsize to.
Track your spending
The first thing you need to do is pour a glass of wine, sit down in front of your computer, grab a piece of paper and pen, and see exactly how your finances are looking. Next, get a small notebook or use an app to track everything you spend for a week or two. This is a powerful way to see just where your money is going, and how much you’re wasting on random stuff you probably don’t even need each month. Be sure to include absolutely everything, including snacks, bottled water, coffee, eating out, groceries, movies, and more.
You’re likely to be surprised at just how much money you’re wasting on things you could easily do without. Remember, the goal isn’t to beat yourself up, you just need to be aware of where you can cut back and save money to reach your travel goal.
