The best advice for your next road trip

Planning a road trip? Road trips are one of the best ways to travel, giving you the freedom to explore at your own place, and the ability to get-off-the-beaten path while seeing spots that you could never see if flying from Point A to Point B.

But there are a few things you need to do to ensure your road trip is a success. Here are some tips to make sure you have the best time on your road trip and avoid many of the common problems and pitfalls:

Check your car

This is number one for many reasons. Before even contemplating a road trip, you need to ensure that your car is in the best condition possible and safe for both you and other people on the roads. Be sure to #CheckYourTreads so you know if you need to get in touch with for some new tyres. You should also check your windshield wipers, lights, oil and water before you hit the road.

Get enough rest

Driving all day can be exhausting for all involved, particularly if you’re travelling with kids. For this reason, don’t set unrealistic goals or commit to a tight schedule. Some days, you may simply need to pack it in early. Make sure you’re stopping every couple of hours so you can stretch your legs and stay alert, and get plenty of rest the night before driving. Tired drivers make mistakes, and road trips aren’t much fun when you feel like you’re barely getting through the day.

Make a loose plan

While you don’t want to commit to a stringent schedule, it’s still a good idea to have a plan based around where you’ll spend each night. Sure, you may change this plan and get off the road early or drive a little longer, but you’ll find it much easier if you have a general idea of where you’ll end up at night.

If you plan to wing it and simply pull over when you get tired, you may be surprised when there’s a local event and no vacancy anywhere in town.

Bring entertainment

There’s nothing worse than heading off on a road trip, only to find that you’re bored two hours into the trip and there’s no entertainment. These days, it’s easier than ever to stay entertained on the road, even when the scenery all looks the same. Preload your phone with a bunch of apps and other entertainment options. You can easily find playlists on Apple Music, Spotify, or Pandora, and there are tons of podcasts to listen to, no matter what subject matter you find interesting.
