We are not sure if this mask is the same as the one that was created by Loki the god of mischief. Anyways, a 9,000-year-old mask was unveiled by Israelis. The mask was unveiled on the 28th of November 2018 and it is believed to be very rare.
Before it was a mask, it was just a pink and yellow sandstone object that was discovered in a field at the Jewish settlement of Pnei Hever. This is in the Israeli West Bank. The artefact was handed to the authorities earlier this year.
The mask is one of the 15 in the world. According to Ronit Lupo, people may have worn an IAA archaeologist mask as part of a ritual or ancestral worship. Although this is just an assumption, and there is, still more to be read out from the mask.
The mask is perfectly symmetrical and still has all its features intact. From the eyes to the perfectly carved in teeth. As aforementioned, it is one of 15 in the world, where 13 are in private collections and 2 have a usable provenance.
What does this mean?
For the archaeologist, this is an early Christmas present. It’s like winning the online casino jackpot. The mask will shed new light on human history. This is especially in the cultural sector. It is also believed that the mask will allow for insights into the ancient ancestral history, as well as rituals that took place in the olden days.
Location of the Mask
The location where the mask was found in the Southern Hills area has been the source of other masks. In the archaeological arena, this is known as the Pre-Pottery Neothilitis Period. With the discovery of this mask, in that location, various theories are being solidified. Take for instance one states that the area served as a key centre for the making of such masks as well as ritual activities.
As with the rest of the world, we will have to wait and see what the future holds. As well as what stories the mask will bring with it. In the meantime, people can continue with their day-to-day activities such as playing casino games, travelling around the world, visiting friends and many more.
