Understanding BMX: A Fun Way to Get a Full Body Workout

If you are growing tired of your usual exercise routine and want to try something new and exciting that will help you take your fitness level to a whole new level; then training on a BMX may be for you. A BMX (also known as a bicycle motocross) is different to a normal bike in several ways.

The big differences are in the design because the frame of a BMX is smaller than that of a mountain bike and is therefore lighter. Further, a BMX bike has only one gear and, at twenty inches, the wheels are much smaller than that of a mountain bike. The differences in BMX bikes and mountain bikes are therefore clear to see.

How can BMX’s provide a full Body Workout?

The difference between BMX bikes and mountain bikes is that the former have been designed to allow the rider to be able to perform stunts and tricks on them. As fun as this may sound, this has become a serious sport and in 2008 actually became an Olympic pastime. This is not to say, of course, that you need to be a professional to use it to get fit. Even the most amateur of riders can use their BMX to get a fit. In fact, according to Health Fitness Revolution, you can use a BMX to get a full body workout: –

1. Increase strength

You will increase the strength in your arms and legs by working your muscles when pedalling and lifting the handlebars to perform tricks.

2. Increase Cardiovascular Fitness

Although this is also true of all cycling, BMX riding also helps to decrease your risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels and heart rate. It does this by increasing your cardiovascular fitness which means that your body is better able to oxygen more efficiently.

3. Achieve a greater Calorie Burn

An average man biking for a full 60 minute session would burn over 500 calories. This has the added benefit of not only help you to shed extra pounds but also to maintain a healthy weight which can help to reduce the risk of you getting type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer.

If you are convinced that BMX biking is for you, there are several ways that you can get involved. You could join a local community group or even set one up of your own. This is a great way to immerse yourself in BMX culture, and ultimately build towards becoming a skilled and talented rider. As we have seen, this can also help you to develop greater levels of physical fitness and health.
