What to eat before and after a workout?

What you eat before and after a workout if so important when it comes to getting that sculpted toned body. As much as the exercise you do in the gym is important, what you put in your mouth is just as important. Before a workout you want to make sure you are giving your body what it needs for energy and then post workout you need to provide your body with the nutrients to restore and repair. I’ve rounded up some of the top food you should feed yourself pre and post workout.


Protein Powders

Any person who is seriously into their fitness would know how beneficial adding in a good quality protein powder into their diet is. Protein powders helps repair and rebuild muscle which is essential when you are an athlete or doing any form of weight training. You can actually have protein pre or post workout. Having the protein shake pre workout has shown to burn more calories for the 24 hours after working out.



Nuts no longer have the bad rep they used to of being a high fat high calorie snack. In fact nuts are now recognized for their good quality fats they provide to the body. Its not just any nuts though, so don’t go digging into that jar of peanut butter just yet. Almonds and walnuts are the best to have. Have an apple with some almond butter and you have yourself a super tasty and delicious snack before a workout that will give you a lot of energy. Do be careful though not to eat a whole bag, just a handful should be enough.


Sweet potato

Sweet potatoes are packed with vitamins and nutrients including vitamins B6, C, D, iron, magnesium and potassium. They also provide the body with a healthy dose of carbs needed to help in post recovery, never mind the fact they are super delicious. Add them with a piece of lean protein and you have your perfect post workout meal.



This has to be one of the best sources of protein you can get from your food. They are also very low on calories so make it an excellent meal to have if you are trying to lose weight or sculpt and tone. Have them with your favourite veges for a well balanced meal.



Banana is a great pre workout snack as it has natural sugar that quickly converts into energy to give you a good boost before you hit the gym. Add it with your favourite all natural nut or seed butter.
